(another)surly crosscheck “shimergo” conversion…

Yet another Surly Crosscheck to come out of the shop with a wonderful “Shimergo” conversion. Built from the frame up, this Surly was set up to assume the role of a year-round commuter.

Rolling on skinny, slick tyres for most of the year, it will be equipped with studded winter tyres in more inclement weather.

To find out more about “Shimergo,” see my previous post, here.
surly 1×1…
•October 20, 2008 • Leave a CommentJust in time for Halloween, or is it simply coincidence? Whichever way it may be, here is a nice custom frame-up build of a Surly 1×1 singlespeed.

Rigged out with street-friendly slicks for the moment, it will be donning some meaty studded Nokian Extreme 294 winter tyres for the upcoming demoralizing cold & snow.

The rear wheel is one of the previously mentioned handbuilt wheels from my prior post. The front was already owned by the customer, and thus, the reason for it not matching the rear.
surly single speed disc wheelset…
•October 13, 2008 • 3 CommentsA total of five custom wheels have been built up by me for folks this past week. When it rains, it pours. So far, that brings my grand total to somewhere north of two hundred wheels hand-built by yours truly.

Here are some lonely looking surly hubs anticipating their new life as a fully functioning no-nonsense wheelset!

And here is the end product with disc brake rotors securely mounted. Look at them gleam!
bikeway master plan workshops…
•September 30, 2008 • Leave a CommentFrom JCCOG:
“Bikeway Master Plan Workshops
Dear residents of Coralville, Iowa City, North Liberty, Tiffin, University Heights, and Johnson County,
We want your input! Please join neighbors, elected officials, and city staff in discussing opportunities to improve bicycle facilities and programs in your community. Your input will be incorporated into the upcoming Metro Bikeway Master Plan, which will help guide future bicycle developments.
You are invited to attend one of two workshops to discuss potential bicycle enhancements for your community – refreshments and door prizes will be provided:
- September 30th, 2008 – 7pm-8:30pm
North Ridge Pavilion, 2250 Holiday Road, Coralville
Focus area: Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin, Johnson County
- October 8th, 2008 – 7pm-8:30pm
Iowa City/Johnson Co. Senior Center, 28 S. Linn Street, Iowa City
Focus area: Iowa City, University Heights, University of Iowa, Johnson County
What is the Metro Bikeway Master Plan?
Since 1968, six bicycle and trail plans have been created by the communities in the Iowa City urbanized area. This year, the communities in the urbanized area agreed a new regional bicycle plan will provide much needed inventory of existing facilities and opportunities to improve bicycle access – many stemming from past enhancements. The plan will address opportunities to improve bicycling through education, encouragement, enforcement, and on-street enhancements.
As the metropolitan planning organization for the area, the Johnson County Council of Governments (JCCOG) was asked to develop the plan.
Please include this notice in upcoming newsletters and mailing lists, or forward to friends who may be interested in attending. We look forward to seeing you at a workshop!”
shirtless pete & the ute win again…
•September 10, 2008 • 3 Commentskona dew “shimergo” conversion…
•August 2, 2008 • 3 CommentsHere’s another “shimgero” conversion to come out of the shop. This time, not only were the shifters swapped out, but the flat bar as well. The owner loves his bike, but didn’t like the limitations that the straight bar had been offering him for the past two years. This is the first Kona Dew that I have put a drop bar on & it looks & rides great!
Check out this post for more information on the benefits of a “shimergo” conversion.

•July 18, 2008 • 1 Commentbike-in theatre…
•July 10, 2008 • 1 CommentIt’s back! I was worried that it wasn’t going to be happening this year. That was until I found fliers for PATV’s great Summer event in my mailbox just the other day. Bike on down to PATV tonight at dusk for the first bike-in theatre of the year. It’s just down the hill from the shop on Dubuque & Lafayette Street.
Tonight’s free feature is Heat Vision & Jack. Starring Jack Black & Owen Wilson, it’s an 80’s style throwback that is funny & cheesy & certainly worth seeing. Stop by the shop for a coupon for a free soda at tonight’s movie!
