colnago fixed gear conversion…

•March 23, 2011 • 1 Comment

Here was a fun one to build up for a customer!

It’s an older Colnago racing frame & fork built up into a blue & silver spectacle!

A healthy dose of fancy Nitto parts only aid to the sweetness of this bike.

I handbuilt the wheels for him using Surly hubs/DT Spokes/& polished Sun CR-18 rims. It has both a fixed cog & a freewheel for no-coasting or coasting options. Continental Gatorskins put the rubber to the road!

more custom handbuilt wheels…

Here are a couple of wheels that I recently built up for a couple of customers.

The first is a Sturmey-Archer internal three speed coaster brake hub laced up to an Alex DM24 rim with DT Champion spokes.

The second is a White Industries ENO single-speed hub laced up to an Alex Adventurer rim with Wheelsmith double-butted spokes.

The ENO hub is eccentric! This allows pretty much any frame with vertical dropouts to be able to be run as a single-speed or fixed gear very easily. The axle mounting points are 7.5mm off center. This provides 15mm of fore & aft adjustment to tension the chain properly. Providing the transmission of power is a White Industries single-speed freewheel. It is stainless steel & super fancy. The whole setup  is pretty slick!

winter tyres…

Just in time for winter after way too long of a wait from my distributor, Nokian studded tyres are here!

These work absolutely fantastic in snow & ice. The metal studs keep ice/packed snow traction at a maximum!

soma saga…

The latest custom frame-up build to come out of the shop is this fine Soma Saga!

It’s a pretty fancy touring build consisting of parts such as a Thomson stem & seatpost, a Chris King headset, & a Pletscher double kickstand.

A Surly Nice Rack is on the front along with an Axiom Journey for the rear to allow a plethora of stuff to join in on the fun.

Just look at that magnificent metal head tube badge!

awesome wheels – hott approved…!

Here is yet another pair of hand-built wheels I made for a customer who wanted a nice wheelset for his ride.

The hubs are Shimano XT disc laced up to Alex Adventurer rims with Wheelsmith double butted stainless steel spokes. Nice & light & strong!

Had I waited a few days, I could have had a Halloween show poster for Hott in the background. Oh well.

Here is Pete about to take a few frames & a bicycle down to the Bike Library on his Kona Ute.

We, at The Broken Spoke, believe strongly in the abilities of bicycles. We are proud to be an integral part of a new website & group dedicated to bicycle advocacy in Johnson County called www.thinkbicycles.org. Please look to it for pretty much all things regarding bicycles in Johnson County.

There will be a benefit dinner for Think Bicycles at The Red Avocado(521 East Washington Street) Wednesday night from 5-9pm. Come on down and help kickstart Think Bicycles!

khs milano tandem & another custom built wheel…

•September 7, 2010 • 1 Comment

Here is the first tandem bicycle to come out of the shop!

It is a KHS Milano road tandem which is nice & fast & also very reasonably priced at $1800.

Oddly enough, there is a used Schwinn Twinn tandem currently(no longer) for sale in the shop for $300!

Also, here is one of a couple of custom built wheels I had built up for some customers this past week or so.

This one is a Shimano 105 rear hub laced up with DT Revolution double-butted spokes to an Alex Adventurer 36 hole rim. A 700x28mm Continental Ultra Gatorskin provides the grip to the pavement. This combination results in a rock solid wheel that basically just does its job with no complaints. It is a “set it & forget it” component for sure!

vassago fisticuff…

•August 10, 2010 • 4 Comments

Here is the latest custom build for a customer to come out of the shop!
Built up from a bare frame & fork, this Vassago Fisticuff can take many of life’s harsh realities in stride.

It is a kind-of-do-everything frameset, akin to a Surly Crosscheck, but more brown.

A Shimergo set up results in reliability & economic good sense.

Check out the sweet analogue clock that fits right into the stem. Classy!

The tarp is there to allow the bike to remain dry when parked outside during rainy work days.
This bike will be ridden rain or shine!
