kona stinky 2-4…

•February 12, 2010 • 1 Comment

Here is a fine example of one thing that makes Kona awesome.

Their kids’ bikes are little versions of real bikes. There are low quality kids’ bikes at department stores. Above those are much higher quality & professionally built kids’ bikes at real bike shops. Then, there are kids’ bikes by Kona!

This is a 24″ wheeled full suspension kids’ bike, the Stinky 2-4. Hydraulic disc brakes & Marzocchi shocks are just a few of the highlights of what make this bike tower above the rest. It was special ordered in for a customer who is going to have one very happy boy.

Check out the following link to see what other kids’ bikes Kona offers.

new year’s ride…

from Mauro –

NEW YEAR’S RIDE. Jan 1- Friday- College Green Park 2:00 PM. Let’s start the new year Riding Right with a small ride to the mall. Starts at College Green park at 2:00 PM sharp, going through City Park and the Mormon Track trail. There will be a quick stop or two to regroup. We will park at the North entrance to the mall making a stop of 15 or so minutes for a cup of coffee/hot chocolate. The ride will be canceled if the temp is below 15ºF (-10ºC). If questionable weather conditions arrive, call Mauro Heck 594-2059 to confirm the ride. There will be a sweeper in the back for safety.

world’s strongest wheels…

•December 18, 2009 • 1 Comment

Well, maybe not. But they are probably the strongest wheels that I have built.

48 spokes, four-cross, 20″ rims, high-flange hubs. About the only thing that could make these wheels any stronger would be a double-wall or triple-box rim.

Lookin’ good!

xtracycle radish w/peapod…

Here is a brand new Xtracycle Radish that was sent to the shop for professional assembly.

It has their “peapod” child seat which mounts directly to the rear deck, which is pretty nice. This bike will be used as the customer’s main form of transportation & will even be ridden through the winter once it is equipped with proper tyres!

terry classic handlebar swap…

How do you make a brand new bicycle that never gets ridden by its owner more appealing?
Put a mustache handlebar on it, of course!

IMG_1193 (Large)
(Before) Just look at that uncomfortable & ugly straight handlebar.

10-16-2009 012 (Large)
(After) Sleek, stretched, & smooth!

10-16-2009 014 (Large)
Nice & curvy!

A shot from the business-side of things. You can see here how natural of a curve the handlebar provides the rider.

waterford track bike single speed…

Here is a custom frame-up build of a Waterford track frame. Which makes this a good time to let you all know that The Broken Spoke is now a Waterford dealer!

10-01-2009 010 (Large)
A nice & light steel frame accompanied by some carbon fiber bits & pieces aid in the overall weight of this bike at 17lbs! A Sugino track crank drives the White Industries freewheel on the rearend. A shop favourite, Continental Ultra Gatorskin tyres, makes the rubber meet the road.

10-01-2009 011 (Large)
Meanwhile, a Zipp carbon wheel up front is held in place by an Easton EC90 carbon fork. Shimano Dura-Ace brakes bring this bike’s speediness to a halt. Carbon Profile brake levers & a carbon bullhorn handlebar along with a Thomson stem finish off the front end.

I thought I had a photo of the rear wheel that I had built, but apparently I don’t. Look for it coming soon! It is the same wheel that was featured in this post.

A customer came to the shop wanting his mountain bike wheels rebuilt. He had some super nice older Sachs mountain hubs that were laced up to some Sun rims that had come to the end of their lifespan.

Where’d the hubs go?

An underlit close-up of the protagonists.

They are laced up with DT Revolution spokes to DT R450 rims ready to roll many more miles!

out with the old & in with the new…

A new single speed conversion, that is! This was brought to us by a customer that wanted to have a cool bike to ride around town on.

8-31-2009 002 (Large)

Here we have an awesome green bike that has seen better days. It could certainly use a new chain & a pair of new tubes in the tyres.

8-31-2009 003 (Large)

Or, it could get tricked out as a pretty sweet single speed! Check out those upside down handlebars. It’s still awesome green, but now ready for the street!

kona explosif revisited…

•August 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

This bicycle was originally built up back in January of 2008. See the original post here:

https://bikesarethesolution.wordpress.com/2008/01/12/kona-explosif-fully-rigid-mountain-bike/

8-20-2009 001 (Large)

It was to become a single speed, so a new wheel needed to be built up. I hand-built this wheel using a Paul Word single speed hub, DT Revolution spokes, & a DT XR 4.2 rim.

1-12-2008 003 (Large)

Here is the original build as a geared bike.

8-20-2009 005 (Large)

And here it is in its current single speed form! The shifters & derailleurs have been removed. The triple chainring crank now only bears one chainring & a chainring guard. The sliding dropouts at the rear allow this frame to easily accommodate a singlespeed wheel without neccesitating any kind of chain tensioner.

the continuing adventures of non-shirtless pete & the ute…

So you’ve got a bundle of wood & a log that is destined for a birthday party fire. How do you get it there?

8-17-2009 006 (Large)

With a Kona Ute, of course! Well done, Pete, well done.
